For over 165 years, commercial fishermen have battled Lake Michigan for their living. Because many of the early fisherman who settled here were French-Canadian, this district was known as the “French Side” of town.

Now on the National Register of Historic Places, Rogers Street is the actual site of the century old fishing yards and sheds.

Rogers Street chronicles a living maritime history that begins here in 1837.

Today, fish tugs still haul the day’s catch.

The United States Coast Guard now succeeds the Life-Saving Services as the region’s guardian.

Divers and others still pry shipwrecks of their secrets and stories.

The 1886 Pierhead Lighthouse, silent witness to dramatic wrecks and rescues, recounts tales of her keepers.

The old rhythms and cycles of yesteryear still pulsate and flow on Rogers Street. Come and discover our stories!
