The Manitowoc County Heritage Center Research Library
The Heritage Center Research Library is available to researchers and history enthusiasts and features thousands of records, photographs, and books.
Records:
The library houses city and county directories from 1864 to the present. Indexes of cemeteries and ghost parishes are also preserved. A proper name index card file of people named in local newspapers and other important publications are maintained from about 1850 to 1970. School records of all students in the Manitowoc Public Schools have been catalogued. A collection of early Manitowoc newspapers is also available for limited examination and referencing.
Also available are county plat maps dating from 1872 to present. The complete tax rolls for all of Manitowoc County from 1860 to 1984 are stored in the Heritage Center and are available for examination upon making an appointment.
Photographs:
The photograph collection at the Heritage Center Research Library features images from all over the county. Images may be duplicated upon request. A photo duplication brochure can be found at the Manitowoc County Historical Society’s website at: www.mchistsoc.org/research.htm
Books and Monographs:
There are volumes of fiction and non fiction early edition books, used by residents of Manitowoc County. There are also brochures and special publications by the communities and organizations of the county. A collection of monographs are available for research at the MCHS Research Library as well. The monographs are also available for purchase in the MCHS Gift Shop. A listing of the monographs can be found at: www.mchistsoc.org/monographs.htm

Lester Public Library
Census on CD:
Wisconsin Censuses from 1840 to 1910 on CD-Rom from Heritage Quest. The library has purchased the discs containing Manitowoc County information. Also available is an index to the 1870 Census. Using the index, you can look up a last name (with it’s many variations) and find out exactly what page of the census it’s located on; no more searching page by page for the one name you need. More discs will be purchased as they become available.

Wisconsin Maritime Museum
The Wisconsin Maritime Museum research collection is considered one of the finest on the Great Lakes. In addition to an extensive collection of photographs, blueprints and ship’s plans, maps and charts, ship’s logs, books and periodicals, the more than 300 linear feet of manuscript materials held in the Library & Archives contain a wealth of primary source documents, records and personal papers.
The manuscript collections include records and memorabilia of important Great Lakes shipping and transportation companies, personal papers and diaries of sailors, captains and submariners, and information on a wide variety of vessels.
The Wisconsin Maritime Museum also maintains vertical subject files on an even broader range of maritime subjects.
The Wisconsin Maritime Museum research collection is housed in the Library and Archives. The holdings contain several significant collections as well as general research material concerning the history of the Great Lakes. The Library and Archives contain approximately 8,000 books and 40,000 photographs in addition to personal and corporate memorabilia.
